Indonesia is a country that adheres to the international system of units to determine a land size. In the area of property that is identical to the size of the area (especially land), Indonesia generally uses unit square meter (m2).

But in Bali, the general measurements used is the ARE unit count. And besides that there are still some units of measurements commonly used to calculate land area.

Well, here are the other types of measurements aside to m2, which are as follows:

  • Are = 100 m2
  • Hectare (ha) = 100 acres = 10,000 m2
  • Square kilometer (km2) = 100 hectare = 10 000 acres = 1.000.000 m2
  • Square feet = 144 (12 × 12) square inches = ± 0.09 m2
  • Yard (ell) square = 9 (3 × 3) square feet = ± 0.84 m2
  • Acres = 10 square chains = 43 560 square feet = ± 047 m2
  • Square mile = 640 acres = 2.59 km2

For your information only, other areas and regions in Indonesia also uses a measurement system that is unique to the respective regions. The wide number of regions in Indonesia sometimes can cause confusion when calculating land units and measurements. Here are some terms used when calculating unit areas within various regions:

  • Ubin (national) = ru (Central Java) = tumbak/spear (West Java) = ± 14.1 m2
  • Bahu/Shoulder = 500 tiles = ± 031 m2
  • Lupit = 250 ru / tile = 3.570 m2
  • Iring = 125 ru / tile = 1,785 m2
  • Paron = 62.5 ru / tile = ± 893 m2
  • Prowolon = 31.25 ru / tile = ± 446 m2
  • Sangga = 5 ru / tile = 70 m2
  • Kesuk (Java Mataraman), varies from 1000 m2 to ha
  • Rakit/Raft (northern coast of Java) = 1000 m2
  • Anggar/Fence (Kalimantan Barat) = 1/33 hectare
  • Borong (Kalimantan Barat) = 1/6 hectare
  • Rantai/Chain (in plantations of Sumatra) = 484 (22 × 22) square yard = ± 405 m2
  • Tampah (approximately 6,750 to 7,680 m2)

Hopefully the above brief information can be useful in helping you make up your mind before you decide to buy property in Indonesia.
